Late to the party but my speed 400 also has some ticking.

It has about 1,100 miles. However, I beat the hell out of that thing. Seems to ride fine, no power loss or anything, but I for sure got a scolding at the dealership when I took it in for the 600.

Now you know it’s not knocking. It’s probably lifters that need adjusting.

It might not be difficult to adjust the lifters. You’d have to check the service manual to see what it would take. Maybe just measure the tappet gap and then let the dealer adjust. I recently adjusted the lifter tappets on my TW200 and it wasn’t difficult. It took a while because I measured and adjusted 10 times but if you’re just measuring it should go pretty quickly. Unless you have to take the engine apart to get to them…
With a service interval of 10,000 miles it's almost certain the valve adjustment is by shims, not screw and lock nut.

My Speed 400 isn't the quietest engine around, but when I mentioned it at the 600mile service they asked what my last bike was - it was a Honda CB500X, and I got the "it's not a Honda sewing machine, all Triumphs sound like that" reply.

We'll see, it goes great, but definitely seems noisy to me.....

Thanks for the reply. They told me the same thing when I first complained. I guess it's part of the "Dealership" customer service training program!....

So, If that's their attitude, I'll keep my riding the Triumph just until the 2 year warranty expires, Then I'll trade it in for a Honda NX500, with an extras cylinder and that normal "sewing machine" sound...This will be my last Triumph due to the crappy response from Triumph Tech Support and the dealerships here in Connecticut....

I'm still trying to decide if I'm being oversensitive..... but there is definitely a metallic ring on the over-run on a closed throttle....

The above post reminded me of my mates 2017 Street Twin 900. His ticking noise was arcing of the spark plug cap to the cylinder head. This was a widespread problem at the time.

Run the bike in pitch darkness and you may see the arcing more clearly.

Hmmm..... I just watched a YouTube video of a rider testing the Speed 400 - sounded the same as mine! ;)

I have a 2022 1200 Rally pro which has a horrendous ticking sound coming from the front of the engine for the first 5 minutes after startup. I’ve been told it is detonation noises entering the header pipes from the cylinders but I don’t know. The bike has done 24,000km so far and seems to perform as new…

It was doing this the day I left the dealership....With 1 mile on the bike. Oil level is good, if not a tad overfilled.
Sounds like valve clearance is too loose on one of the valves...

Is anyone else hearing this on their bike?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!
I noticed the valvetrain noise when I bought the 400 right off. The shim style valve adjustment system normally quiets down after breaking in as valve clearance from valve seat will decrease over time. I've seen this on previous bikes with same setup.

yeah, mine is a "ticker" for sure. at idle - yes, but not overly "loudly"...
seems to be more pronounced when "cold" or during "warm-up".
and seems to disappear in hotter weather.
seems to be some sort of gear backlash goings on...
likely balance shaft gear backlash (or other)...
doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.
